Socially conscious rap artist and activist, M.I.A. (born Mathangi Arulpragasam) is teaming up with clothing giant H&M, to donate old clothing that will be the focus of “World Recycle Week” this spring.
The global initiative is to get people to donate their old throwaways, in an effort to stop garments from ending up in landfills because clothing is not bio-degradable at this point.
According to occasionalplanet.org, approximately 12 million tons of fabric and 300 million pairs of shoes become landfill waste every year in North America alone.
“World Recycle Week” is from April 18th, 2016, through the 24th and on April 11th, 2016, M.I.A. will be releasing a video (for H&M’s website) that documents the environmental effect that landfills full of clothing have on the environment.

Discount vouchers are issued to those who donate, to keep the circle going and since 2013, old threads have been recycled into new textiles, such as denim lines and animal eared hoodies for children.
Though there has been some sharp criticism of the retail giant and Arulpragasam’s collaboration, their ultimate vision together, is "to have zero garments going to landfill, as well as saving on natural resources".
