Straw Bale House Trend

All types of materials are being recycled and upcycled everyday to create new homes in our ever-evolving communities. One of the newest sustainable trends to hit the neighborhood, is "brown construction" or "straw-bale construction”.

This building style originated in Mongolia; for building maternity hospitals and worker's homes at a very low cost and it basically calls for a surplus of leftover “rice straw”, which is used to create this brand of insulated housing.

Using straw from local sources is mostly encouraged though because the main surplus or source of "rice straw" coming from Mongolia, is a product and result of the deforestation problem, which has been progressing for years there. (see http://bit.ly/23p0sZi).

This new form of construction though, is becoming more and more common in varied parts of California and we ran across a few of these "straw-bale" homes, that you can see right here: http://bit.ly/1PxKO3v

Hopefully Mongolia’s forests can be saved one day soon.
